Luke Shaw Drops Exit Hint as Saudi Interest Grows – A Blow for Ruben Amorim Ahead of New Season

As Manchester United prepare for what they hope will be a fresh, more promising campaign, unsettling news has emerged from within the dressing room.

On the eve of the new Premier League season, long-serving defender Luke Shaw is reportedly considering a move away from Old Trafford — a development that could deliver a significant blow to Ruben Amorim’s early plans for the club.

According to reports from the Daily Mirror, Shaw is said to be "ready to quit" Manchester United after over a decade at the club. 

The 30-year-old defender is believed to be open to offers from other teams, including Saudi Arabian clubs, who are said to be showing serious interest in acquiring his services. 

This revelation comes at a time when Amorim is trying to steady the ship after a disappointing 2024–25 season.

Despite a slow start to the summer transfer window, Manchester United’s recruitment activity is finally gaining momentum. 

The club recently completed the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford — a major addition to their attacking options — and attention has now shifted to securing a new striker.

United are reportedly pursuing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, although Newcastle United are also in the race for the highly-rated forward.

However, while new signings are coming in, there’s also pressure from Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) to offload players and trim the wage bill. 

That means some familiar faces may be on the move — but until now, Luke Shaw was not expected to be among them.

Names like Tyrell Malacia, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and even Alejandro Garnacho have been circulated in the media as possible departures, but Shaw — despite his ongoing injury issues and limited availability — hadn’t been placed on the transfer radar. That seems to have changed dramatically.

Shaw’s situation is complicated. Though he was part of the preseason squad that toured the United States and featured in the match against Leeds, concerns about his long-term fitness remain. He has played just 27 games across the last two seasons, often sidelined with injuries. 

With his contract running until 2027 and a reported weekly wage of £150,000, Shaw is one of the higher earners at the club — and that could be a sticking point for new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is determined to reduce United's ballooning salary expenses.

The new season presents a tactical shift for United under Amorim. The manager is known for his three-at-the-back system, and Shaw is now facing stiff competition for a place in that defensive setup. 

Though he's versatile enough to slot into the back three, he may no longer be a first-choice player in his preferred left wing-back role.

New arrivals like Patrick Dorgu, who joined in January, and Diego Leon, the highly-rated 18-year-old signed from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño for £3.3 million, have impressed in preseason. 

Amorim, in particular, had praise for Leon following his performance in the friendly against Leeds:

“He performed admirably. He is strong, he is learning quickly, and I believe he will become an excellent player.”

Then there’s Diogo Dalot, who also provides reliable cover on the left side.

With these younger, fitter options emerging, Shaw may find it increasingly difficult to secure regular playing time. 

For a player with ambitions to remain in the England squad, especially with major international tournaments around the corner, the prospect of sitting on the bench might not be appealing.

Despite all this, the report claims that Amorim is not in a hurry to offload Shaw.

The Portuguese manager values the experience and leadership Shaw brings to the squad. 

However, should a formal offer arrive — particularly from a Saudi Pro League side willing to match his wages — United are unlikely to stand in his way.

A potential departure would mark the end of a significant era for Shaw at Old Trafford. 

Having arrived from Southampton in 2014, he has been part of numerous highs and lows at the club, battling through injuries, managerial changes, and fan scrutiny.

Now, as the Red Devils look to turn a corner under Amorim, Luke Shaw’s future remains one of the major talking points — and if this is truly the beginning of the end for his time in Manchester, it may signal a changing of the guard at United.

Whether he stays and fights for his place or chooses a fresh start abroad, Shaw’s next move will be watched closely — both by United supporters and potential suitors from the Middle East.
