Man United's €50 million Onana replacement is the result of a "probe" into the Old Trafford failure.
If Andre Onana, the much-maligned custodian, decides to leave Old Trafford this summer, Manchester United has supposedly found the perfect successor.
In an eye-catching move, Manchester United paid Inter Milan £47.2 million (€55 million, $63.5 million) to capture Cameroon international David de Gea after failing to decide to extend his contract after the 2022–2023 campaign.
However, many would contend that Onana has failed at the Red Devils in the present, as the 29-year-old has committed several high-profile errors in the last two years.
Rumour has been circulating that head coach Ruben Amorim does not trust the 6' 3" goalie and that a new keeper might be in goal next season after United's defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final in late May.
Journalist Gianluca di Marzio now asserts that Monaco has "enquired" about Onana and that United may pursue Marco Carnesecchi of Atalanta if he departs in the upcoming weeks and months.
According to the rumour, the Red Devils have contacted the keeper's agent initially, but not the Italian team, who Tuttomercatoweb (via Sport Witness) estimates is worth about €50 million (£42.8 million, $57.6 million).
Key players Ederson and Ademola Lookman may be traded this summer, thus the Serie A team is reportedly eager to collect the most price for their academy product.
Seasonal differences between Onana and Carnesecchi
As of April of this year, no keeper had committed more mistakes that resulted in goals for Premier League clubs across all competitions since the 2023–2024 season began than Onana (eight).
Additionally, Onana broke an unwelcome record this season by becoming the only player to play for three separate teams to make it to the European finals without winning any of them.
He was beaten by Manchester City to win the Champions League title in 2023 while he was at Inter, lost the Europa League final against United while playing for Ajax in 2017, and finished second for the Red Devils against Spurs in the Europa League last month.
On the other hand, the 6' 5in Carnesecchi helped Atalanta earn a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season by keeping 18 clean sheets in 44 games.
In contrast to Onana, whose stock is declining, his is increasing. Although the former Italy Under-21 player is coveted, it is unclear if he will quit the Italian team.
