Tottenham had the opportunity to sabotage Arsenal's acquisition of a top Bundesliga player.
Leroy Sane, an attacker for Bayern Munich who has long been a target for Arsenal, has apparently been offered a free transfer to Tottenham this summer.
At the end of next month, the 29-year-old winger's contract with the recently crowned Bundesliga winners will expire, making him a free agent.
After hiring super-agent Pini Zahavi to represent him, Sane was given a new three-year contract at a lower wage, but Bayern was unable to reach an agreement with him.
With an outstanding 83 goal total in 139 appearances for Manchester City, who won two Premier League titles while he was at The Etihad, Sane has a wealth of prior Premier League experience.
According to Sky Sports, rivals Spurs and Arsenal in North London have both been contacted about a deal for the Germany international.
The Gunners have long been interested in the wide player because he played under Mikel Arteta while he was Pep Guardiola's assistant in Manchester.
Since Tottenham let both Eric Dier and Harry Kane to go to Bavaria in the summer of 2023—although Dier was a free agent and could have gone anywhere he desired—the two teams actually have a good working relationship. Even though Sane is getting close to his 30s, he still has a lot to contribute.
This season, he has 13 goals and six assists in 45 games for Bayern. A Tottenham team looking to add new attacking potential this summer may find the German appealing due to his versatility as a flanker.
Sane's pay might cause issues for Tottenham.
Sane joining Tottenham on a free transfer would undoubtedly be a huge win for the team before they make their Champions League comeback.
However, a club that doesn't usually pay out big sums of money, even for their best players, will most likely have problems with the player's salary demands.
At £190,000 per week, captain Son Heung-min is the highest paid player. James Maddison and Cristian Romero are not far behind the South Korean.
Sane was last offered a base salary of about £160,000 per week by Bayern, which did not include bonuses.
Sane's age will almost probably be taken into consideration in any choice, even though Tottenham could be able to afford that sum.
A return to Europe's top cup competition has given the club an estimated £100 million boost, and there is still a chance that Romero's pay might be removed if the anticipated move to Spain goes through.
Spurs will probably be worried about Arteta's connections to the winger and the possibility that Sane could be convinced to transfer to the red side of north London instead, but a lot will now rest on what the player himself decides.
Ironically, Sane's first match for Spurs might be against Bayern at the Allianz Arena in August, when the two teams are scheduled to play a friendly match before the new season begins.
