Man Utd "makes move" to recruit a PSG forward who has turned down a new deal.
After finding out that Lee Kang-in rejected a contract offer in the French capital, Manchester United is reportedly attempting to sign him from Paris Saint-Germain.
In an effort to provide Ruben Amorim with a team that can compete in both the Premier League and domestic cup competitions the next season, Manchester United is stepping up their summer recruitment plans.
After a terrible season in which the squad ended 15th in the league and lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, the United management is aware that many adjustments must be done.
After reaching a personal agreement with Matheus Cunha and notifying Wolverhampton Wanderers that they would be invoking his £62.5 million release clause, United has taken action.
Next week, the trade will be formally finalised, and United will pay the price in installments.
Following Cunha's capture, United is looking to add another attacking midfield player, Fabrizio Romano stated on Tuesday.
Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford is definitely on their radar, but Lee has also surfaced as a potential target.
CaughtOffside assertion Jason Wilcox, the technical director of United, has "made a move" to recruit Lee after Ruben Amorim recognised his potential to give his club much-needed goals and inventiveness.
After he "rejected" their most recent offer, contract negotiations with PSG "stalled," giving United "encouragement" to pursue the right winger, who can also play as a No 10.
The specifics of United's "move" are not explained in the report, although it is possible that Wilcox has contacted PSG or Lee's agency to express interest in a transaction.
Other possible suitors for Lee include Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Napoli.
The two teams that are expected to provide United the most battle for the left-footed star are Atleti and Napoli.
While Napoli is "pushing hard" to sign the South Korean player with Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne, Atleti has had a long-standing interest in Lee and may soon make a "formal approach" for him.
United is keeping tabs on Lee and Mbeumo.
This season, Lee has made 45 appearances for PSG, tallying six goals and six assists. He helped PSG win the domestic treble and go to the Champions League final by playing as a center-forward, right flank, and No. 10. Even though Lee is a talented and captivating player, United supporters could understandably prefer Mbeumo to join.
The latter is more deadly in front of goal and has already shown his abilities in the Premier League.
Mbeumo is one of the Premier League's most formidable players after recording an incredibly amazing 20 goals and eight assists in 38 league games this season.
Amorim's forward line is in dire need of goals, and Mbeumo would probably provide more than Lee.
United would undoubtedly move up the league table in 2025–2026 if Amorim could use a fresh center-forward in addition to Cunha and Mbeumo.
Profile of Lee Kang-in: Play style and career to date
Lee was born in January 2001 in Incheon, South Korea, and as a 10-year-old, he tried out for Villarreal and Valencia in Spain. In the end, he was admitted to their academy by the latter.
In December 2017, at the age of 16 years and 10 months, he made his Valencia reserves debut.
He became the youngest South Korean player to make a professional debut in European football less than a year later when he made his first-team debut in the Copa del Rey.
The offensive midfielder spent a few more seasons at Valencia, but before moving to Mallorca in 2021, there was conflict between the board and staff on his deployment. He scored seven goals in his 73 appearances there.
PSG was drawn to it and purchased him for €22 million in 2023. That October, he scored his first Champions League goal for his new team.
The Trophee des Champions, which is the French counterpart of the Community Shield, was Lee's maiden trophy in January 2024. He won man of the match after scoring the first goal.
Despite starting 26 games for PSG this season, he did not play in either of the quarterfinal or semifinal legs in the Champions League.
He has played a variety of positions, most frequently as an offensive midfielder or on the right wing, but he has also covered as a striker, midfielder, left winger, and even a right-back once.
He actually performs best in the half spaces that separate the central attacking zones from the wings. Although Lee has playmaker qualities that are best displayed closer to the box, he crosses the ball well.
According to statistics, he is in the 99th percentile for pass completion among Ligue 1 offensive midfielders and wingers this season, and Fbref highlights his resemblance to players like Isco, Xavi Simons, and Bernardo Silva.
In addition, his shot-creating actions per 90 minutes place him in the 92nd percentile.
Even though he is only 24, Lee is already making progress towards realising the promise that was apparent when he appeared on a football reality show at the age of six.
