Man City will finalise the deal for the former Liverpool player that Jurgen Klopp adores.

In the midst of their internal reorganisation, Manchester City is reportedly in the process of hiring former Liverpool coach Pep Lijnders as one of Pep Guardiola's new assistants.

To keep him inspired and to make sure he stays at the top of his game, Guardiola is keen to switch up his backroom crew.

As a result, coaches Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez have left Man City after their contracts had expired.

Carlos Vicens, the set-piece coach and assistant coach, has also left the Etihad to take over as Braga's manager in Portugal.

Lijnders is reportedly "set to join City" and assist in replacing players like Lillo, Dominguez, and Vicens, according to a number of outlets, including The Times, Fabrizio Romano, and The Athletic.

Lijnders will soon be named the new first-team coach after reaching an agreement with City.

The 42-year-old will cross the City-Liverpool divide as a result of the deal. After a six-month tenure as manager of Dutch team NEC Nijmegen, he served as Jurgen Klopp's assistant at Liverpool from 2015 until 2024.

It is believed that Lijnders was the driving force behind several of Klopp's strategies for Liverpool, which helped them win prestigious titles like the Premier League and the Champions League.

According to Klopp, who holds the Dutch coach in the highest regard, Pep Lijnders was "by far the most influential guy in the last years at this club" in 2024.

He did an absolutely outstanding job. He is a truly remarkable source of inspiration to me

After Klopp left Anfield last summer, Lijnders was quickly appointed as Red Bull Salzburg's new manager in Austria.

However, Salzburg had dropped to fifth place in the Austrian Bundesliga and 32nd out of 36 teams in the Champions League rankings when he was fired in December.

Next season, Lijnders will play Liverpool.

Since then, Lijnders has been a free agent, and he is now prepared to join City and play with former opponent Guardiola.

As the two teams are ready to compete for the Premier League title, Lijnders will be hoping to help City defeat his beloved Liverpool the next season.

Liverpool cruised their way to Prem triumph this season but City lagged considerably behind, yet Guardiola’s side are expected to fight back with a fury following a tremendous summer.

Romano also disclosed that Kolo Toure, a former defender for City and Liverpool, may follow Lijnders' example and become a member of Guardiola's coaching team.

The most recent position Toure held was at Wigan Athletic, where he was fired in January 2023 after failing to win any of his nine games as manager.

Ben Wilkinson and Craig Mudd, the U21 coaches, will also assist Guardiola at this summer's Club World Cup, according to Simon Bajkowski, the chief City journalist for the MEN.
