Newcastle ‘genuine’ contenders to upset rivals in £62.5m attacker pursuit

According to a recent update from reputable trade expert Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United has suddenly emerged as the "genuine" candidate to win the race to sign Wolves forward Matheus Cunha this summer. 

As everyone knows, Eddie Howe is looking for a flexible attacker who can play through the middle or on the right, two of the many roles Brazilian Cunha has filled for the Molineux team this season.

Given that Cunha has been on their radar for a while and that Alexander Isak's long-term future at St. James' Park is still uncertain, connections to other attackers seem unavoidable. 

But in his most recent GiveMeSport briefing, Romano has now provided a new update on what lies ahead for the Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham target. 

Cunha, who has scored 16 goals and provided four assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, has had a spectacular season in a Wolves team that has just really taken off towards the end of the season.

Only in February did the explosive forward sign a new contract with Wolves, but it featured a £62.5 million release clause that other clubs are now interested in. Additionally, Romano mentioned Newcastle as a possible destination and told GiveMeSport that he anticipates Cunha leaving Wolves soon this summer. "Yes, I believe it can be a quick deal, to be honest," he replied. I believe so.

Additionally, the competition for Cunha could not only be about which team activates his release clause first. In fact, we could observe a similar circumstance to Raphinha's in 2022, when Chelsea and Leeds United agreed on a sum to buy him, but he decided to hold off until a move to Barcelona. 

Even though Newcastle is in Europe and United is not, a move to Old Trafford might end up being the more likely course of action if that is the case.
