After Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City from the Champions League, Pep Guardiola has announced the four teams he believes have the strength to win the competition.
Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick in the second leg as the Premier League team lost to Los Blancos 6-3 on aggregate in the playoffs. The Man City manager ruthlessly disregarded Arsenal as a potential European champion and predicted the defending champs to win this year. "Of course Madrid are a contender, definitely," Guardiola told reporters at the Etihad Stadium following a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid However, there are more strong teams in the area.
The Champions League season is going to be fascinating. For this trophy, Madrid is always the favourite. Madrid is usually the frontrunner, even when other teams are having a fantastic season.."But there are other teams that are playing very well," Guardiola continued. Barcelona is wonderful, Liverpool is having a great season so far, and Paris Saint-Germain, led by my pal Luis [Enrique], is winning. Madrid is clearly the favourite, though.
Guardiola acknowledged that this time, the superior team prevailed, and City's consecutive losses to Real Madrid—now three in four years—have become a noticeable trend in the knockout stages. "The best team won," the Spaniard declared. They were worthy.
"We haven't been very good this season; I thought we were better than Madrid in the past, but not this time. Quality is always important in this rivalry. Madrid can play for extended periods of time this season; they were active, quick on the ball, and had good pressing.
"You have to accept it and move on," Guardiola continued. Nothing lasts forever. Although the 3-2 [first leg] loss was difficult to endure, we must now grow from it and acknowledge that there are still, I think, 30 or 40 games left [this season].
Our goals must be to place in the top four of the league, win the FA Cup, and return to this competition the following season. Regarding my team's performance in the Champions League over the years, I have very little to criticise.
"Guardiola reminisced on previous meetings, saying: "I felt we were extremely near when we were ousted by Madrid in the past. We made it to both the semifinals and the finals. When a team performs better than you tonight, you have to acknowledge it and give them props.
In the round of 16, Arsenal will face either PSV or Feyenoord in the European scene. When the Dutch teams defeated AC Milan and Juventus, respectively, they generated headlines.
